Joseph

by the Rev. Paul McLain

When Ruthie and I lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of our favorite places to visit was a small Gothic church on the Old Santa Fe Trail called the Loretto Chapel. It was built in 1873 and is still in use today. There is a legend about the chapel:

“When the Loretto Chapel was built,

Welcoming Worry

by the Rev. Scott Walters

Somewhere in southern Virginia, driving home from a wonderfully relaxing Thanksgiving in Richmond with our kids, I asked Ardelle if she wanted to listen to a podcast episode about anxiety. She said, “sure,” and so we did that. Which, it occurs to me now, might provoke some anxiety in you at the thought of being

The Year I Played with a Full Deck

by the Ven. Mimsy Jones

Some of the best advice I have ever received came from a woman named Mary Jennings – Sister Mary Jennings, to be exact.

Sister Jennings was one of a small group of nuns (and one priest- male, of course) from the Roman Catholic Cenacle Retreat House in St. Louis who came to Memphis every summer to

Emmanuel Meal

Emmanuel Meal is a Christmas dinner for our neighbors who are experiencing poverty or homelessness. Calvary offers this meal on the third Monday of December every year. You can volunteer to cook, serve, clean up, and more. Sign up here.

You also can purchase paper turkeys for $40 each to subsidize the cost of this meal.

Stay Connected

by the Rev. Paul McLain

Since last Wednesday, I experienced the deaths of six persons in my circle of Calvary, previous parishes, and personal friendships. And some of you told me of others in your circles who died over the last few days. Two mantras I keep repeating have helped me through these days. One is, ‘be gentle with yourself.’

2022 Emmanuel Meal: Yay or Nay?

Emmanuel Meal—yay or nay?

Monday, Dec. 19, is the 80th Emmanuel Meal for Calvary Episcopal Church. Should our tradition continue? We have been looking for volunteers to take on leadership roles. If you would like the tradition to continue, please step up. We are looking for people to lead committees as it is six weeks away. The work is easy

Overriding the Default Setting

by the Rev. Scott Walters

“In the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship.” – David Foster Wallace

The quote above is from David Foster Wallace’s commencement address at Kenyon College

Triage Artistry

by the Rev. Paul McLain

During a recent conversation about the overload of tasks, information, distressing news, and distractions that so many of us are experiencing these days, a wise person observed, “we are all becoming triage artists.” By that he meant we all, even retirees, are learning to prioritize the vast amount of our external stimuli in the instant,

A Note from the Rector on Vestry Elections

Vestry election season is upon us. And several important goods are in tension in parish elections. The first is that an effective vestry depends on diverse gifts and perspectives. It needs men and women, of various ages and interests, with different areas of expertise and experience. It needs longstanding members and active people who have joined Calvary more recently.
