Inspired by decaying homes and crumbling walls, New Orleans-based artist Adele Sypesteyn creates textural, abstract paintings, sculptures, and multimedia works that focus on the passage of time. At a young age, New Orleans-based artist Adele Sypesteyn noticed subtle signs of aging in the city’s architecture. Interested in the passage of time, she began creating textural paintings, sculptures, and multimedia works that increasingly focused on the small details of decay. Eventually, she transitioned to painting neutral, abstract works with small pops of bright color, while retaining the texture of her previous work.
Sypesteyn received her art education from Tulane University in New Orleans, Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, and Washington University in St. Louis. After graduating from art school, she worked as a draftsman and the sole female employee at a boating company in New Orleans, creating ink and pencil drawings, eventually transitioning to selling her work in galleries. After 20 years of painting for galleries, she transitioned to representing herself at various antique shows around the country. She founded the Art with Adele Academy, where she continues to teach aspiring artists fundamental abstract painting techniques.
