Is every poem a sort of prayer? How about prayer? Is it always a sort of poem? This seminar, in two parts, will explore language, desire, and form.
The first part will consider poems from a variety of sources that state desire, address themselves to a God, or make some reference to prayer. Mostly not the kind of poems found used in liturgies, we will explore these exile prayers and think of what they know and say. The second half of the day will consider the form of Collect, a five-fold form at least 1000 years old. We will look at this form and then write some. Open to people who pray and don’t; people who write poetry and don’t.
