CANCELLED:Community Ministries Book Club: Always With Us? What Jesus Really Said About the Poor
April 1, 2025 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
ZOOM
Does Jesus really say in the Gospels that poverty is inevitable? Described by the publisher as "a strong theological call for ending the abomination of systemic poverty," Liz Theoharis's book Always with Us? What Jesus Really Said about the Poor provides a scholarly answer to this question. It also offers from a specifically Christian point of view a way of engaging poverty that does justice to its victims and to the biblical vision, and is a worthy follow-up and complement to the Fall 2024 Community Ministries Book Club on Matthew Desmond's pivotal work Poverty, by America. Join us on Zoom at either noon or 6:00 p.m. on March 4, 18, and April 1 to discuss how this book may inform, inspire, and shape our work in making God's love visible in downtown Memphis. |

Waffle Shop
April 2, 2025 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
It’s been 97 years since plates were piled up with waffles, chicken hash, and fish pudding at Calvary’s first Waffle Shop in Lent of 1928. For all that’s changed in our world since then, Memphians still stream to Calvary each year for these three dishes, as well as more “recent” additions such as shrimp mousse, tomato aspic, and Tennessee bourbon pie. Why some of these might not have been on the menu even as long as you’ve been alive! But Waffle Shop has become the ultimate annual comfort food for many, so we are pleased to let you know that it will be up and running again in 2025!
Dining is offered in person in the Mural Room on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of 10+ can make reservations in advance by calling 901-525-6602. To-go meals will be offered.

Lenten Preaching Series: Barbara Brown Taylor
April 2, 2025 12:05 pm - 12:45 pm
CALVARY’S FIRST NOONDAY LENTEN SERVICE took place in a downtown theater 102 years ago. In the decades since, in peacetime and war, booms and depressions, moon landings and struggles for civil rights, and all the events that have shaped our common life in Memphis, Lenten Preaching Series preachers have spoken truthfully, hopefully, and prophetically to the world as it is, and to our lives as they are. They have nourished us when we’ve been depleted and challenged us to be God’s agents of healing, justice, and mercy in a world that has always needed much more of all three. And Calvary’s Lenten Preaching Series continues in 2025, adapting and speaking, as it always has, to the times. We hope you’ll join us.

“Choral Evensong is a 45-min long peace-inducing church service in which the ‘song’ of voices sounding together in harmony is heard at the ‘even’ point between the active day and restful night, allowing listeners time for restful contemplation–church members, agnostics and atheists alike.” (from choralevensong.org)

Holy Week begins with the remembrance of Jesus’s humble yet triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Our service begins with the Liturgy of the Palms and includes the reading of the Passion Gospel. The service closes in silence as we walk together into Holy Week.
“The disciples brought the donkey and the colt and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.”
We’ll have a special in-gathering of coats to provide for our neighbors in the future. At the end of the winter season, clean out your closets and bring us your coats and other gifts to share.

Holy Eucharist, Rite II with Children’s Chapel
April 13, 2025 10:30 am - 11:30 am
10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist, Rite II with Children’s Chapel
We also live-stream Holy Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. Watch the livestream on Calvary’s Facebook page or on our website.

Perhaps more than any other part of the Bible, this bizarre and beautiful letter presents so much material to imagine with as we consider what it means to be the church together and aim to find our place within it as individuals. Please text that you're coming to 833-458-3263 by 3:00 pm on Monday so we can plan accordingly and we'll let you know if we're on!

Using the Voice for Life curriculum established by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), Organist-Choirmaster Kristin Lensch promotes a complete and quality approach to children’s music ministry that is as much a Christian education experience as it is a musical training experience. Choristers often become peer leaders over time as they progress through the program. Rehearsal is Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Afterward, they attend Compline in the church until 7:15 p.m.

The choir sings each week at the 10:30 a.m. worship service, monthly Evensong, and offers special liturgical services and concerts during the year. While strongly based in the music of the Anglican church, their repertoire spans the centuries and global traditions, from plainsong to spirituals. In addition to making music at home, the Calvary Choir has traveled to England to participate in a week-long choral residency at the Bristol Cathedral. They are known for both their dedication to and love of music and close camaraderie. Interested singers should contact Organist-Choirmaster Kristin Lensch.

Panera Bread, 1961 Union Ave, Memphis, TN 38104, USA
High schoolers, join us for a Bible study at the Union Ave. Panera Bread on Mondays (except for the first Mondays of the month) at 6-7 p.m. We have handouts every week with the scriptural texts and we are currently reading 1 Corinthians.

Calvary Choir
Calvary Choir
April 30, 2025 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Crook Auditorium
Both professional singers and auditioned volunteers make up Calvary’s primary group of choristers: the Calvary Choir.
