My Spiritual Journey

by Monica Marshall, Sexton and Director of Security

As a small child, I was a member of a Baptist Church. When I became a young adult, I moved from a Baptist Church to the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). But no matter how hard I tried to study it, I couldn’t understand the teachings of their denomination; they just didn’t sit well in my heart. Calvary Episcopal Church came at a time in my life when I was searching for a spiritual home that valued tradition. What drew me in was the church’s deep respect for liturgy, its emphasis on inclusivity, and the welcoming atmosphere of the congregation.

Since becoming an Episcopalian, embracing and living out my faith has been a defining aspect of my journey. The lessons I’ve learned and the ways in which to be part of its timeless language and structure have become a source of comfort and guidance for me. It has shaped my beliefs and daily life. One of the most striking aspects of the Episcopal tradition is its worship style. The Book of Common Prayer was given to me after my confirmation at Calvary in December 2022, and it has helped me deepen my connection with God and others.

Calvary is known for its warm and accepting community. One of the things I value most about being an Episcopalian is the openness to different viewpoints. The Episcopal Church encourages respectful dialogue on matters of faith, doctrine, and social justice. This type of environment has allowed me to ask questions, wrestle with doubts, and grow in my understanding of God’s love. Like any spiritual journey, my experience as an Episcopalian has included challenges. There have been moments of uncertainty and times when I’ve struggled with faith. However, the Episcopal Church’s tradition of emphasizing reason, scripture, and tradition has helped me navigate these periods. Being encouraged to think critically and reflect deeply has strengthened my relationship with God and my confidence in my beliefs.

Being an Episcopalian isn’t just about attending church on Sunday; it’s about carrying the values of love, justice, and compassion into my everyday life. I’ve become more mindful of how I treat others, more engaged in issues affecting the community, and more committed to personal spiritual growth. Also, it has given me both the foundation and the freedom to live out my faith authentically. My journey as an Episcopalian continues to evolve, full of new discoveries and ongoing growth.
