To remember Calvary Church in my will, do I designate Calvary or The Calvary Endowment Foundation?
You may designate either “Calvary Episcopal Church” or “The Calvary Endowment Foundation” All bequests are turned over to The Calvary Endowment Foundation to be independently managed and invested to enhance the ministries of the Church.
If I want to add a bequest to the church, do I need to completely re-do my will?
Although revisiting your will on a regular basis is always a good idea, it is possible to make a bequest without completely re-doing your will. This can be accomplished by a stand-alone amendment to your will called a codicil.
Can you suggest sample codicil?
“I give, devise and bequeath to Calvary Endowment, a qualified 501(c) (3) charitable organization located at 102 North Second St, Memphis, TN 38103, the sum of $ [or % of my adjusted gross estate or all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate] to be used for the benefit of the Calvary Endowment.”
Can I specify how a gift from my estate is to be used by the church, if, for example, I have a particular interest in music, or outreach, or education?
Certainly. The Calvary Endowment currently manages a number of funds designated to assist specific programs, namely The Calvary Lenten Preaching Series and Calvary’s community ministries.
Does The Calvary Endowment Foundation spend only the interest earned by its funds, or does it invade the corpus when necessary?
Unless a donor specifies otherwise, The Foundation distributes only income earned on its funds. It maintains the corpus as a continuing legacy.
If I have already remembered the church in my will, why do I need to join The Legacy Society?
The Calvary Endowment Foundation has established the Legacy Society to acknowledge and thank the donors who have included the Church in their wills. And we hope we might use your generous example to encourage others to follow suit.
