SUMMARY:Adult Formation
DESCRIPTION:The word “formation” is more than just Episcopal jargon for Sunday School or Christian Education. When we come together in community to study and pray and discuss the ways of God\, we are being shaped and reshaped by new ideas and the perspectives of others. Sometimes we get a glimpse of God and of who God calls us to be. \n  \nSeptember 7\, “What I Did on My Summer Vacation Sabbatical\,” Scott Walters\nWe’ll launch the fall season with some storytelling and reflection from Scott Walters on his sabbatical journeys. \n  \nSeptember 14\, A Conversation with Wesley Rowell\nWesley arrived at Calvary mid-summer and is already deep in the work of this place. Come hear a little bit of his story and how his winding path to faith and church brought him to Memphis. \n  \nSeptember 21\, Spirituality of Giving\nA conversation about how to live generously now and how to continue to give beyond your mortal years. We often avoid conversations about money and death. Come participate in a joyful reflection about these realities that we’ll all navigate. \n  \nSeptember 28\, Wisdom Then & Now\, Catherine Meeks\nDr. Meeks is the author of The Night is Long but Light Comes in the Morning and was the founding director of the Absalom Jones Episcopal Center for Racial Healing. She is a favorite Lenten Preacher\, and we’ll be in dialogue with her as a teacher this morning. \n  \nOctober 5\, Sunday Scripture with Katherine Bush\nCome dig in to some good conversation and learn more about the stories we hear in church. \n  \nOctober 12\, Samaritan Counseling Returns to Calvary\, Kristin Fox-Trautman & Jeremy Pitzer\nCalvary was a founding supporter of the important work of the Samaritan Counseling Centers. We are delighted to host an office on-site again\, an outpost of support and care in downtown. Meet Jeremy Pitzer\, LCSW\, who will serve here at Second & Adams\, and hear from Executive Director Kristin Fox-Trautman about this renewed partnership. \n  \nOctober 19\, Faith at Home\, Allison Pace\nLocal author and Episcopal leader Allison brings wisdom and lived experience to a conversation about faithfulness in our households at every stage of life. She’ll be speaking today about lessons applicable to just about every home.\nFollowing this conversation\, Calvary will offer follow-up small groups for fellowship and connection on Sundays and Wednesdays with her workbook\, The Sacred Order of Parenthood. \n  \nOctober 26\, The Art of Calvary\, David Lusk and friends\nHave you noticed all the beautiful artwork bringing our new spaces to life? Come hear about the historical pieces we’ve brought forward and the new commissions for this next chapter of Calvary. David\, Katherine\, and some of the artists will be in conversation on this Sunday morning. \n  \nNovember 2\, The Enneagram for All the Saints\, Sandra Smith\nThe Rev. Sandra Smith is a certified Enneagram teacher. Her 25 years of teaching the Enneagram as a tool for personal\, professional\, and spiritual growth give her a solid foundation of the system\, as well as a fluidity in her teaching. She teaches internationally and is the author of The Enneagram Map to Your Deeper Self: Living Beyond Your Type. \nSandra Smith will offer a day-long workshop: “The Enneagram Map: Deepening Our Self-Awareness and Our Spiritual Lives” on Saturday\, November 1\, here at Calvary. \n  \nNovember 9\, Sacred Secular Texts\, Tim Huebner\nDr. Tim Huebner\, Rhodes Provost and History professor\, guides us through a close reading of the Declaration of Independence. As we approach America’s 250th year\, what does this secular text have to say to us? \n  \nNovember 16\, Sacred Secular Texts Tim Huebner\nDr. Tim Huebner\, Rhodes Provost and History professor\, guides us through a close reading of the Declaration of Independence. As we approach America’s 250th year\, what does this secular text have to say to us? \n  \nNovember 23\, The Inner-life and Inner-workings of the Organ\, Jonathan Ambrosino\nFor our recently-completed organ restoration\, Jonathan Ambrosino of Boston directed the project’s artistic side. Raised in an Episcopal choir of men and boys\, Jonathan has spent much of his life researching organs of our exact builder and era. This background allowed him to bring a keen sense of how to get the sound and feel of our Aeolian-Skinner organ closer to its 1935 roots. In this Sunday’s forum\, Jonathan will discuss what that sound is and some of the remarkably low-tech yet detailed ways that sound is achieved. \n  \nNovember 30\, Advent Festival (not in the Chapel\, room TBD)\nJoin us on the Sunday after Thanksgiving for our annual Advent Festival. Wreath-making supplies\, candles\, and some fresh greenery will be provided. To ensure enough greenery for everyone\, participants are also encouraged to bring greenery from their own yards. We look forward to coming together for a time of festive fellowship and creativity!\nWreath-making continues at Coffee Hour; supplies will be available for households to make wreaths to take home. \n  \nDecember 7\, Bishop Phoebe Roaf\nEach year\, Bishop Phoebe visits each parish in the Diocese to confirm new members and to strengthen the connections among the larger Episcopal community. Come hear her thoughts on this Advent season of life in our Church. \n  \nDecember 14\, Lessons and Carols: Hymns & Anthems\nIt’s been some time since Calvary offered a Christmas Lessons & Carols (coming up on Sunday evening\, December 21). We’ll take a deeper look at the meaning of the anthems and hymns selected for this beautiful event. \n  \nDecember 21\, Lessons and Carols: Poetry & Scripture\nIt’s been some time since Calvary offered a Christmas Lessons & Carols (this very evening at 5:00). We’ll take a deeper look at the scriptural readings and the poetry selected for this beautiful event. \n  \nDecember 28\, no formation
