SUMMARY:Calvary Boys and Girls Choir
DESCRIPTION:The Boys and Girls Choir\, made up of students with unchanged voices in grades three and up\, sings semi-monthly at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Using the Voice for Life curriculum established by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM)\, Organist-Choirmaster Kristin Lensch promotes a complete and quality approach to children’s music ministry that is as much a Christian education experience as it is a musical training experience. Choristers often become peer leaders over time as they progress through the program. Rehearsal is Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Afterward\, they attend Compline in the church until 7:15 p.m.

SUMMARY:Calvary Choir
DESCRIPTION:Both professional singers and auditioned volunteers make up Calvary’s primary group of choristers: the Calvary Choir. The choir sings each week at the 10:30 a.m. worship service\, monthly Evensong\, and offers special liturgical services and concerts during the year. While strongly based in the music of the Anglican church\, their repertoire spans the centuries and global traditions\, from plainsong to spirituals. In addition to making music at home\, the Calvary Choir has traveled to England to participate in a week-long choral residency at the Bristol Cathedral. They are known for both their dedication to and love of music and close camaraderie. Interested singers should contact Organist-Choirmaster Kristin Lensch.

Don’t miss this extraordinary event that honors our musical heritage and showcases this remarkable instrument. \nPerformed by the talented Todd Wilson\, head of the organ department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and curator of the magnificent E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall in Cleveland\, OH\, this program will include many audience favorites such as Bach’s Passacaglia\, music from Bizet’s opera Carmen\, a transcription of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air)\, and Widor’s famous Toccata from the Fifth Organ Symphony. Also featured on this concert is a piece from the original dedication service in 1935: César Franck’s Chorale in A Minor. \nA gala reception will follow\, sponsored by the families of Laurie & Brooks Monypeny and Ellie & Josh Hardison.

DESCRIPTION:Pentecost Party\nThe Feast of Pentecost is often celebrated as the birthday of the Church\, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles. All are encouraged to wear red and join us for a church birthday celebration in the Calvary Commons after the 10:30 a.m. worship service. \nPentecost\nChristians have come to understand the meaning of Pentecost in terms of the gift of the Spirit. The Pentecost event was the fulfillment of a promise that Jesus gave concerning the return of the Holy Spirit. \nSpeaking in tongues\, a significant effect of receiving the Spirit\, is interpreted by some as symbolizing the church’s worldwide preaching. In the Christian tradition\, Pentecost is now the seventh Sunday after Easter. It emphasizes that the church is understood as the body of Christ\, which is drawn together and given life by the Holy Spirit. Some understand Pentecost to be the origin and sending out of the church into the world. \nThe Day of Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of the church year in the Episcopal Church (BCP\, p. 15). DESCRIPTION:Join the Calvary choirs for their week-in-residence at Durham Cathedral. Calvary Choir will lead Evensong every night in the largest Norman building constructed between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style. Close to the North Sea and two hours south of Scotland\, excursions to places like Lindisfarne (Holy Island)\, the Roman ruins of Housesteads Fort along Hadrian’s Wall\, and Alnwick Castle are included.
