High schoolers, join us for a Bible study at the Union Ave. Panera Bread beginning on Monday, October 14 at 6-7 pm. You don’t have to bring anything but you’re certainly welcome to bring a Bible. We’ll have handouts every week with the scriptural texts. We will start off by discussing the first of Paul’s letters to the Corinthians! Perhaps more than any other part of the Bible, this bizarre and beautiful letter presents so much material to imagine with as we consider what it means to be the church together and aim to find our place within it as individuals.

Join Calvary women and friends for a weekly conversation about the Bible and the way we live our lives. Over the course of the year, we’ll read most of the Bible with Brian McLaren’s We Make the Way by Walking as a guide. Participants should bring their morning beverage of choice, a Bible, and a copy of McLaren’s book.

The Baguette Brothers Bible study meets every Thursday morning from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Barth House Episcopal Center. The group reads and discusses the Gospel passage for Sunday as a way of preparing for worship and deepening our understanding of scripture. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated on the first Thursday of each month at 7:15 a.m. All men are invited. Come join us!

Reading Genesis, by Marilynne Robinson
Join an online conversation group called “Gleanings” this fall as we read slowly through novelist Marilynne Robinson's Reading Genesis. Copies of the book are available at novel bookstore, or wherever you buy books. (Click HERE for a New York Times review by Francis Spufford.) All are welcome and newcomers are invited to join the conversation at any time. Please stop by the table at the entrance ramp to the nave following the 8:00 a.m. service or before or after the 10:30 service to drop off your cash or check donations for the Emmanuel Meal! (We will also be able to accept donations with debit or credit cards.) This year for the Emmanuel Meal we will host our downtown neighbors for an outside, to-go version of this annual Christmas dinner. We give thanks for the flexibility of everyone as this year looks different due to the ongoing renovations of our kitchen and dining spaces. We will have huge pots of chili and other warm, nourishing sides along with plenty of hot coffee and hot chocolate available. For those interested we will help connect them to resources that we offer at Calvary and that are available at local organizations as we make God's love visible in downtown Memphis during this most special time of year.

Calvary is one of ten Monument Lab Re:Generation grant recipients for 2024, continuing our work around the slave market that operated on our block in the 1850s. What's taken place since the grant was announced? Who's been involved and what are the hopes and dreams for the future of the site? Join Scott Walters with special guests Margaret Haltom and Annie Parker in the Great Hall to learn more.

Nov 24: Conversation with Bishop Phoebe Roaf
Each year, Bishop Phoebe visits each parish in the Diocese to confirm new members and to remind all of us of the larger Episcopal community that we are part of. Come hear her thoughts on this season of life in our Church.

Dec 1: Advent Festival
We invite parishioners of all ages to create an Advent wreath for use at home. We will provide all the necessary wreath-making supplies, candles, and fresh greenery. However, to ensure enough greenery for everyone, we ask that participants bring some from their own yards. We are excited about the opportunity to come together for festive fellowship and creativity!

87 Adams Legacy and Memorial Conversation, December 8
Join us for a conversation with Ujijji Davis Williams, of JIMA Studio, and Azzurra Cox, of the University of Pennsylvania, the team selected to design a public memorial space on a site adjacent to Calvary Church where people were enslaved in the 1850s. JIMA (jee-mah) Studio describes itself as "a landscape architectural design and urban planning studio that collaborates with community groups, organizations and builders committed to culturally relevant placemaking and strategic implementation. We centralize participatory design methods to provide full site design and planning services, from idea to implementation." Come meet the team and hear about the process that we're just beginning with them will unfold.

“These are a few of my favorite things,” December 15 and 22
We’ll take a look at some of the Episcopal Church's greatest hits: our favorite collects, hymns, liturgies, and stories. Explore the pages of the Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal, learn the meanings embedded in these words, and share your favorites too!

9-12th grade students are invited to meet in the High School EYC Room (301) from 9:15-10:15am for Sunday Formation: Journey to Adulthood (J2A). J2A focuses on critical thinking and responsibility while fostering a connection to the Christian community. During Sunday formation, youth will explore new ways of engaging with scripture and prayer.
