Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, dear Calvary Friends!

Christmas is a season, not just a day. We are in the midst of the deeply, yet differently, wonderful 12 days of Christmas. The tinsel is crooked, and the tree has seen a better day. The only gifts left wrapped are for people whom we have not yet seen during the holidays. The holiday candies are picked over and crumbly. Most gifts that needed to be changed for a different size or a color that actually works have been returned and replaced. And, something even better than the frenzied days just before Christmas Day has descended like a gentle, peaceful cloud. Anticipation has been replaced with relief, satisfaction, time now to sit with friends and family. This is Christmas—deep Christmas, less glitz but so much meaning. My hope and prayer for each of you is that you will relish these wonderful days in all the ways you can.

As you read this, Molitor and I are in New York City, reconnecting with our home and good friends there. Even Gretchen, our terribly narcissistic wire-haired dachshund, has happily returned to the urban jungle and resumed her position as the loudest, snippiest little dog on 52nd Street. And, yet, though it is wonderful to be home in the City, a new chamber of my heart has been activated this year: the part that will forever now be affected and ignited by all of you at Calvary Church in Memphis. As this year ends, among all the blessings in my life, I am filled with gratitude for this chance to come to know and love you. I am plenty old enough to know that heart connections, when they come along in life, are to be cherished; and I do indeed cherish these!

In just three days, 2017 will be here. Many of you like me recall thinking that 2017 sounded like something out of science fiction, and now it just seems like ordinary life, doesn’t it? Amazing. What this new year will bring for Calvary, though, is far from ordinary: this is the time that a new rector will come to live and minister among you. When the ball drops this New Year’s Eve, a lot of eyes will be looking toward the coming of this person as a new era at Calvary begins.

Join us at Calvary as often as you can in these coming months as together we prepare for the new rector. Great things are coming!

Happy New Year!
