Second Chances

by Kim Moss, Hospitality HUB CEO

Great things are happening just next door at the Hospitality HUB. Calvary Episcopal Church has been the principle supporter of the HUB since its inception in 2007 and without this support, the HUB would surely not exist. But why does it exist and what are we doing over here?

We provide our guests with a second chance at life: a helping hand to move them to achieving success in their lives. We do this by providing a host of services such as securing birth certificates and state IDs, paying for shelter nights, and assisting in securing jobs. The HUB also provides guests an address to receive mail, lockers to store clothing, and a compassionate counselor who listens to their problems and seeks a solution.

But perhaps the most important word that can describe what we do is the word, ‘connections.’ The HUB serves as the Memphis community’s point of entry for homeless individuals into the larger service delivery system. Homeless people come to us and volunteers, such as Calvary parishioners Will Hayley, Weezy Calandruccio, and Susanne Darnell and former parishioner, Camille Deadrick, conduct an assessment of the guest’s needs and help him/her develop a plan of action. Then we connect them with the multitude of organizations in the community that will meet their individual needs.

There are so many ways YOU can become involved with our work!

  • Organize our hygiene room/clothes closet; products need to be boxed and bagged; room needs to be reorganized.
  • Distribute our newly updated Guest Services brochures to downtown and midtown businesses.
  • Volunteer for guest birth certificate and vulnerability interviews on Tuesday mornings.
  • Help in our mail room and answer phones on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in 2-3-hour shifts between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Assist job seekers in completing online job applications on Thursdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Help with grant research. Approximately 23 potential grant opportunities have been identified. We need help organizing these into a document to show deadline dates, etc. This can be done from the volunteer’s home.
  • Use your writing skills in helping us develop vignettes of guests’ success to inform the community of our great work.
  • Help with our upcoming online newsletter.
  • Assist us with administrative tasks.
Yes, we provide people with a second chance. Why? Because redemption is for everyone.
